Artist Spotlight - High Scarlet

If you're a frequenter of this blog then you and I share a common drive. One which continually pushes us to find the next new track that, for one reason or another, makes you stop whatever you're doing and either A. Make a thizz face, B. Start bobbing your head to the beat, or C. Blare your speakers and start jumping around your apartment. High Scarlet's songs will make you D. All of the above.

Coming to you from Lancashire, UK, High Scarlet's music ranges from progressive electro to filthy dubstep but it doesn't stop there. Charlie Clough, the sole member of High Scarlet, describes his music as "very tonal and progressive, but at the same time simple and dirty as cat sick", and that is a spot-on analysis. Archetype is a perfect example of this, starting off with a nonchalant piano lead only to throw you off of the face-melting electro drum & bass that drops at 0:47. The remix of Pass Out melds together what may start out as a gritty combination of hip-hop/rap vocals and dubby womp builds into another blend of drum and bass madness backed by relaxed, almost jazzy melodies. Now, don't let those two get you thinking that High Scarlet is strictly a drum & bass machine. Omnicide holds some nasty drops and Weekend Paranoia (first feature in FMM #9) is a polar opposite, delivering dubstep wobble as a subnote to the piano lead.

Now, I usually try to limit myself to 3-4 songs in these posts but I'm going to have to insist that you listen to all 6 of the songs below. I guarantee at least one of those songs will strike a chord with you the same way it has with me. To start it off is the BRAND NEW track High Scarlet released literally hours ago! Want more? It's FREE!! So crank up your speakers and get ready to move!

Artist Spotlight - Special Features

Here's another rising star in the progressive house genre coming to you from across the pond. London native Eden Anderson (a.k.a. Special Features) has only been releasing tracks for the better half of 2011 but I get a feeling he'll soon be a big name in the genre. His remixes feature upbeat melodies and pulsing rhythms that make will make you wish you were back at the Tiesto concert last fall. If that's not enough to get you hooked, Special Features recently won the 'Happy Violence' remix contest that Dada Life held. Here's his winning remix track along with a two others that should give you an idea what to expect when Special Features gets big. In the meantime, you know the drill. Crank up the volume and enjoy!

Skrillex - Breathe + Live Mix!

Say what you want about the guy, Skrillex (Sonny Moore) is blowing up whether we want him to or not. With his 400+ show tour coming to a close and 5 Grammy nominations in his belt, few can argue that Skrillex is bringing change to the EDM world (for better or for worse). What kind of change will it bring? We can argue about that all day, but in the meantime here's a new Skrillex track called 'Breathe' that popped into the interwebs yesterday. This song shows his low-key electro side that a lot of people refuse to recognize. In any case, 'Breathe' makes me want to relax on a grassy hill and watch the clouds roll by (a dramatic difference from the dance-seizures his other tracks induce).

If one free Skrillex track isn't enough to tide you over, how will a whole flipping live set do! Recorded only two days ago in Tallahassee as the Mothership tour was coming to a close. I'll admit the quality isn't the best, but if you've ever been to a Skrillex show this mix should bring back some fond memories. Get comfy for these ones, (maybe imbibe some herbal sustenance), and enjoy!

Artist Spotlight - Luke Da Duke

This week's Artist Spotlight is brought to you by the color Red, the letter Q and the coma that I've been in since the Dada Life post.

Video games and pop-culture have been a big part of electronic music for a long time now. As the "nerd mentality" becomes more and more popular, it's about time 18 year-old DJ/producer Luke Da Duke, a.k.a. Lucas Szulansky, starts gaining recognition in the EDM scene. His tracks draw inspiration from classic gaming (especially Nintendo) for everything from catchy hooks and 8-bit melodies to grimy bass drops and riffs that make you smile while rocking out (listen to "Some Cheez Its" and you'll know what I mean). I'm as much of a fan of hardcore electro as the next guy, but I love the fact that there's an artist out there like Luke Da Duke who's music can incorporate gritty bass and a theme that I constantly refer to as 'triumphant'.

What makes Luke stand out in my eyes ears is the fact that right when you think you have his music figured out, he'll throw in something new that you won't see coming. Tracks "Palladio" and "Falcon Punch" stand out in that way, delivering unique takes on dubstep, classical music and falcon-themed punches.

Luke Da Duke's self titled debut EP released yesterday and is available to download for FREE on Soundcloud or you can buy it on Beatport. I've included it below along with several of my favorite tracks (also FREE!) after the jump. Check them out, add them to your library and show Luke some support on his Facebook page!

Artist Spotlight - Charles Deluxe

Proving that even Argentina is contributing to the EDM scene, Charles Deluxe is one of my favorite producers in the electro/house genre right now. His progressive melodies, sometimes glitchy bass and ability to really capture the mood of whatever song he remixes make CD stand out from the crowd. This unique style and production quality recently led to CD winning the remix contest for MYNC, Ron Carroll & Dan Castro's 'Don't Be Afraid'. I could go on but at this point we're all better off just turning up the volume and pressing play.

If you like what you hear then be sure to 'Like' Charles Deluxe on Facebook! I really want to see this guy get more support in the states so that eventually we can shuffle our faces off to his tracks in a club!

Artist Spotlight - Flinch

Adam Glassco, a.k.a. Flinch, has been a part of the EDM scene for a while now and I personally consider him to be one of the unsung heroes in the world of Dubstep. With and affinity for a combination of flowing melodies, slow wobbly basslines and massive drops, Flinch is always bringing something new to the table in both his remixes and originals.

The most recent addition to his library is a remix of Dan Sena's Song of Siren. This banger takes an otherwise chill song and throws gritty womps and high-pitched electro growls into the mix, all the while utilizing the original track's vocals to maintain an ominous theme. Classic Flinch if you've been keeping up with his releases in the past.

Song of Siren just released on Beatport so if you're a fan be sure to show your support and purchase it and other Flinch tracks there. Since I hate parting ways without throwing some free music your way I've included several of my favorite Flinch tracks for you to add to your library. Enjoy!

His signature mashups feature progressive electro beats and basslines guaranteed to get crowds moving. With a residency at MO/TAV's monthly electro night, PULSE!, and a handful of shows on the way, DevRun is rapidly making a name for himself in SLO. Artist Spotlight - John Smith

With mere hours to go before The Graduate turns into a monster filled madhouse, it's time to turn the spotlight on DJ and CEO/Co-founder of HLGN Productions, John "Hooligan" Smith. After only 2 years in the EDM scene, John Smith has made it clear that he intends to not only influence the SLO music scene, but to define it. Whether it's his electro-house/moombahton infused DJ sets or the monthly EDM shows HLGN brings to MO/TAV ("PULSE!") and Cielo Cantina ("Blowout Wednesdays"), John is one to keep your eye on. Be sure to catch him tonight when he opens for Figure and The Killabits at The Graduate!

Artist Spotlight - The Killabits

What does Canada have to offer aside from maple syrup, hockey, and a superior health care system? BASS and lots of it. The Killabits are only one example of the many DJ/producers coming out of our neighbor to the north, and they're coming with quite a bang. This duo from Toronto is made up of Sam KBz and Biz Davis who, after releasing numerous mixes on the interenet in 2010, signed with leading dubstep record label Play Me Records to release their first EP, titled 'Hard Feelings', back in April. Now they're teaming up with artists like Zeds Dead and taking the electronic scene by storm. Their gritty bass lines make The Killabits stand out in the scene while their music spans across the genre. Below are a few tracks that should help you get acquainted with them before their debut performance in SLO this Saturday at The Graduate, opening for Figure. Hide your babies, The Killabits are coming!!

Artist Spotlight - FIGURE!!!

Today I'm starting an official countdown to what is going to be one of the craziest shows to come to SLO this fall. That's right, I'm talking (well, typing) about Figure @ The Graduate this Saturday! If you haven't heard of Figure then it's about time you start paying attention. Here's what Beatport says about him:
“Scoring positions in Beatport’s top ten charts may have gotten him recognition, but a fantastic amount of praise has been raining down on him lately as some of the leading artists in electronic music have valued his live performance skills as some of the best in the business. It’s those kind of endorsements that load up Figure’s tour calendar...” – Beatportal.com
Lucky for us, we have a chance to see him Saturday night!! Featuring tracks from his new album, Monsters of Drumstep Vol. 2, this Halloween/costume party/explosion is one show you won't want to miss! And if all of that isn't enough to catch your attention, Figure has been giving away FREE tracks left and right! Click "Read more" for a few songs along with a video to give you an idea of what to expect! Artist Spotlight - Devin Martin

Good morning and happy Friday my fellow bass fiends!!

The artist I'm throwing at you today mixes electro, house, dubstep and drumstep. Devin Martin came out of Orlando, FL, where this sort of hardcore EDM music hasn't been as popular as it is in our neck of the woods...a.k.a. the beach. Luckily this didn't stop him and he eventually gained support from artists such as Figure, Cold Blank, Helicopter Showdown, and Sluggo. With releases soon coming out on Ultragore and Play Me Records, this is one artist to keep your eye on.

Here's a few tracks that should help you push through one more work/school day before the weekend. Turn up the music and start shuffling in your cubicle! Then, when your boss shows up, just say you had an itch in your crotch and you didn't want to offend your coworkers!

Artist Spotlight - Klaypex

Fun fact: I once saw three guys at a show having their own 'Dubstep Guns' imaginary battle... thing.

Virgins aside, the music behind this video is from the emerging duo Klaypex. They already have a solid following after releasing their first EP, titled 'Loose Dirt' for free, yes FREE!! Their space-y (as in the final frontier, not the Kevin) bass lines and remixes of pop songs may not be a crowd pleaser for 'strictly hardcore' fans but their EP is definitely one of the most well-rounded albums I've heard in a while. Be it the upbeat electro, chill-step, or the laser-cannon firing songs, Klaypex is definitely a worthy addition your music library.

Artist Spotlight - Ajapai

My song posts have been pretty upbeat since going live on Saturday, so I think it's time to change the mood. Recently completing his first US tour, Ajapai proves that Japan is making some grimy contributions to the dubstep scene. If your ears aren't bleeding after listening to Blast, be sure grab his EP and blare it until they do.
